Google is rolling out a new Purchases tab in Gmail’s sidebar, designed to help users keep track of their online shopping orders and deliveries in one place.
Since 2022, Gmail has supported order tracking by displaying banners with shipment details from confirmation emails. That feature remains unchanged, including summary cards for packages due within 24 hours.
The new Purchases tab expands on this by displaying multiple summary cards for active orders, complete with item thumbnails and quick-action buttons. For example, clicking “Track order” on an Amazon email card will take users directly to Amazon’s tracking page, bypassing the need to open the original email. Purchases not marked as “arriving soon” are listed below the delivery cards.
Google says users will be able to disable the feature via Settings > Inbox type > Customize, though availability may vary as the update rolls out.
The move revives earlier privacy debates, as Google’s purchase tracking relies on scanning receipts and order confirmations sent to Gmail. Critics have previously warned about the implications of such data collection, though the company maintains that users remain in control of the feature.
Alongside Purchases, Google is introducing a smarter Promotions tab. Gmail will now sort promotional emails by “most relevant,” based on user interactions, while ignoring unread or discarded messages. Google will also add “nudges” to highlight expiring deals or offers. Users who prefer the classic setup can disable the Promotions tab entirely.
The new updates are rolling out globally for personal Gmail accounts on both mobile and web.
