January 28, 2025 (Reuters) – Jimmy Donaldson, known to millions as MrBeast, is making waves with a bold bid to buy TikTok, the wildly popular social media platform. In a TikTok post viewed more than 73 million times since Monday, Donaldson, flying high in a private jet, told his followers, “I might become you guys’ new CEO! I’m super excited!” He also promised $10,000 to five new followers, showcasing his signature generosity as he teased a major move.
While Donaldson offered few details about his bid, he assured viewers that “it’s gonna be crazy.” His announcement has sparked widespread speculation, positioning him as one of several suitors interested in acquiring TikTok, a platform currently embroiled in a political drama in the United States.
A Platform in Peril
TikTok’s future in the U.S. has been uncertain ever since former President Donald Trump pushed for a ban on the app, citing national security concerns over its links to the Chinese government. Last year, the Biden administration signed legislation giving TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, until January 19 to sell the platform or face a U.S. ban.
As the deadline loomed, various figures, including former President Trump, have floated proposals for a solution. In a post on Truth Social, Trump suggested a 50-50 joint venture, claiming it would allow TikTok to remain operational while “keeping it in good hands.” Meanwhile, Trump signed an executive order extending the deadline for TikTok’s potential sale by 75 days.
Other Potential Buyers
Among the high-profile individuals eyeing TikTok are Elon Musk and Oracle chairman Larry Ellison. In recent reports, Bloomberg noted that China might be considering a sale of TikTok to Musk, the world’s richest man and owner of the social media platform X. Musk, who has long opposed a TikTok ban, expressed concerns on X about the imbalance in the U.S.-China tech landscape, stating, “Something needs to change.”
Trump himself voiced support for Musk purchasing TikTok during a recent news conference, remarking, “I’d be open to him buying it, yes.” Trump also mentioned Ellison, whose company Oracle manages TikTok’s servers and has long been a critical player in the platform’s U.S. operations.
In addition to these tech moguls, billionaire investor Frank McCourt has expressed interest in acquiring TikTok. McCourt, who has been vocal about the platform’s data privacy practices, is bidding to acquire TikTok without its proprietary algorithm, aiming to run it on technology from his Project Liberty Institute.
Legal and Political Implications
The ongoing debate over TikTok’s future also has significant legal and political ramifications. Experts argue that President Trump could play a key role in influencing the platform’s next owner. Georgetown University law professor Anupam Chander remarked, “It’s going to be a winner that’s likely to be politically sympathetic to President Donald Trump.”
Chander also criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the situation, claiming the law granting the president broad control over TikTok’s fate was an “unforced error.” He added, “It was a terrible idea to put the future of a massive information platform into this political maelstrom.”
As negotiations continue and key players jockey for position, the future of TikTok in the U.S. remains uncertain, leaving its millions of users in suspense as they await further developments.
