An urgent call for action has been made to address existing gaps in Nigeria’s cybersecurity measures, particularly in tackling the growing menace of cybercrime in the country.
In a write-up titled ‘Cybersecurity Management in Nigerian Corporate Organisations: An Imperative for National Security,’ Columbia Business School expert Erhomo Richard Egedi emphasized the critical role of cybersecurity in the face of increasing digitalization, with a particular focus on its significance within Nigeria’s corporate sphere.
Egedi’s research delved into the cybersecurity management structures of Nigerian corporations, examining the assets, threats, and vulnerabilities they encounter in an evolving global digital landscape. He underscored the vast and varied potential consequences of inadequate cybersecurity for Nigerian corporate entities.
The study employed both positivist and interpretivist paradigms, gathering responses from a representative sample of 328 IT managers and proprietors. The data were then analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).
Despite the widespread adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) by Nigerian corporations, Egedi highlighted a significant gap in their corresponding cybersecurity measures. This vulnerability extends beyond individual organizations, posing macroeconomic and national security risks. Egedi argued for an expanded definition of national security to encompass present and potent cyber threats affecting areas such as economic growth and energy security.
While developed countries have established specialized cyber agencies, emerging nations like Nigeria need to catch up. Egedi stressed the pervasive nature of cyber threats and the lack of expertise and infrastructure in many economies to counteract them. He called for a prioritization of comprehensive cybersecurity training at all hierarchical levels within organizations.
The role of the Nigerian government is crucial in establishing specialized regulatory bodies and enforcing strict cyber compliance, given that cyber threats transcend national frontiers. In the digitally intricate era, Egedi emphasized that proactive cybersecurity measures are non-negotiable for Nigeria’s burgeoning corporate realm, as secure digital spaces are not just corporate assets but also cornerstones of national security.
