The Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria has appealed to the Federal Government to adopt modern technology in agriculture to enhance food production across the country. The forum also advocated for the revitalization of the Bank of Agriculture to fulfill its mandate more effectively.
The call was issued in a 16-point communique after the forum’s 3rd National Conference, held last week in Abuja. In addition to advancing technology, the communique stressed the need for a data-driven approach, urging the Federal Government to establish a community data bank of verified farmers to streamline support programs.
Signed by the Deputy National Chairman (North), Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, among other members, the communique proposed creating agricultural hubs nationwide, with enhanced security measures, including the involvement of community vigilante groups. These hubs aim to support sustainable food systems and protect agricultural investments.
The former deputy governors emphasized that “entrenching good governance is essential for achieving food security and sustainable growth in Nigeria,” aligning with the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. They also recommended improved cooperation between governors and their deputies to foster stable and democratic governance.
