Japanese technology company NTT and automaker Toyota Motor Corporation have unveiled a significant joint investment of 500 billion yen (approximately $3.3 billion) aimed at developing AI-driven autonomous driving technology. The collaboration seeks to eliminate traffic accidents and enhance road safety, marking a major step forward in the advancement of autonomous vehicle systems.
The investment plan focuses on creating a mobile AI platform that will comprise three key components: AI infrastructure, intelligent communication infrastructure, and a distributed computing platform. The joint project is set to commence in 2025, with expectations of working with industry partners by 2028 and initiating widespread use of the technology by 2030.
Toyota has highlighted its commitment to developing software-defined vehicles, prioritizing safety and security. This initiative builds on a prior partnership formed in 2017 between NTT, Toyota, Ericsson, Intel, and NTT Docomo to establish the Automotive Edge Computing Consortium, which aimed to create a network system for processing data from connected vehicles.
In conjunction with this announcement, the alliance has reached a cooperation agreement with GSMA to leverage its Open Gateway API program, which will enhance the development of automotive services utilizing 5G technology.
The collaboration between NTT and Toyota is poised to significantly improve road safety by enabling vehicles to intelligently assess accident causes and respond automatically in emergencies. Furthermore, by integrating data sharing and communication technologies, the partnership aims to build an intelligent transportation ecosystem that optimizes traffic flow, reduces congestion, and enhances overall travel efficiency, particularly for elderly drivers.
As the automotive industry moves towards a more connected future, the integration of AI and 5G technology will play a critical role in shaping safer and more efficient transportation solutions.
