January 29, 2025 – In a historic market downturn, U.S. chipmaker Nvidia lost nearly $600 billion in market value on Monday, marking the largest single-day drop in American stock market history. The sell-off was triggered by concerns over advances in artificial intelligence (AI) made by Chinese startup DeepSeek, which many believe could challenge U.S. dominance in the field.
DeepSeek, an AI company based in China, recently introduced its DeepSeek R1 reasoning model, an open-source system that has stunned industry experts with its efficiency. The company claims that its model was developed in just 55 days at a cost of $5.58 million, using approximately 2,000 Nvidia H800 GPUs. By comparison, U.S. tech giants such as OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta have invested hundreds of billions of dollars into AI development.
DeepSeek’s AI assistant app surged to the top of the U.S. iOS App Store, surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT, further intensifying concerns over China’s rapid progress in artificial intelligence.
Stock Market Sell-Off
The announcement of DeepSeek’s advances led to a sharp decline in AI-related stocks:
- Nvidia shares plummeted by 18%, wiping out nearly $600 billion in market capitalization.
- Microsoft fell by 2%, while Alphabet (Google’s parent company) dropped 4%.
- Semiconductor firms Micron Technology and Arm Holdings lost 10%, and ASML slid 6%.
- Companies in the AI energy sector, such as Constellation Energy and GE Vernova, also saw declines of 20% or more.
The Nasdaq Composite tumbled more than 3%, reflecting broader concerns among investors about AI competition from China.
Industry and Political Reactions
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella described DeepSeek’s progress as “super impressive and super-compute efficient,” warning that developments out of China should be taken seriously. Meanwhile, U.S. lawmakers have begun calling for stronger export controls on technologies that could benefit Chinese AI firms.
Representative John Moolenaar (R-Mich.), chairman of the Select Committee on China, emphasized national security risks, stating:
“The U.S. cannot allow CCP-backed models like DeepSeek to leverage our technology to surpass us in AI development. Stronger export controls must be implemented immediately.”
Despite the panic in the market, some analysts remain skeptical about DeepSeek’s claims. Stacy Rasgon, an analyst at Bernstein, noted that while DeepSeek’s results appear impressive, “we don’t believe they built an OpenAI-level model for just $5 million.”
AI’s “Sputnik Moment”?
Some experts see DeepSeek’s success as a major inflection point in the AI race between the U.S. and China. Giuseppe Sette, president of AI research firm Reflexivity, described the breakthrough as potentially “AI’s Sputnik moment.”
“DeepSeek has taken the market by storm by doing more with less. Their approach could serve as a playbook for future AI development,” said Sette.
The AI arms race is now more competitive than ever, with China proving that it can develop cutting-edge models at a fraction of the cost of its Western counterparts. Whether this signals a long-term shift in AI dominance remains to be seen, but the immediate impact on global markets has been undeniable.
