Lagos, Nigeria – The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a strategic partnership with tech giant Google, aimed at transforming the country into a global technology hub. The initiative, which focuses on infrastructure development, digital skill enhancement, artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, cloud adoption, and a supportive investment framework, is expected to accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Speaking during a television interview monitored in Lagos, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mr. Inuwa Kashifu, revealed that the partnership was launched following a high-level meeting between President Bola Tinubu and Google CEO Sundar Pichai in Paris.
Five Pillars of Digital Transformation
Kashifu outlined the five key areas the partnership would focus on:
- Infrastructure Development: Enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure to support technology growth and innovation.
- Scaling of Citizens: Upskilling Nigerians to equip them with the digital competencies needed to thrive in the evolving global economy.
- AI Innovation: Promoting artificial intelligence research and application to solve local challenges and drive economic growth.
- Cloud Adoption: Facilitating cloud technology adoption among businesses and government entities to improve efficiency and scalability.
- Investment Framework: Creating a favorable investment climate to attract tech investors and drive sustainable economic development.
“The partnership will lead to the development of a roadmap for Nigeria’s digital transformation, positioning the country as a global player in the technology space,” Kashifu stated.
Focus on Data Centres and Sustainability
Kashifu emphasized the critical role of data centres in powering Nigeria’s digital economy. He highlighted the need for the country to domicile sensitive data for both government and private sectors, enhancing data sovereignty and security.
“No data centre relies on grid electricity globally. They go off-grid and go green because they also need carbon credits. We are looking at that as part of the framework,” Kashifu explained, underscoring the partnership’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Building Digital Skills for the Future
The NITDA Director-General also stressed the importance of embedding digital skills within Nigeria’s educational curriculum, starting from primary school to tertiary institutions. This strategic move aims to build a digitally literate workforce capable of leveraging emerging technologies.
“There is a need to upskill Nigeria’s workforce to take advantage of the opportunities presented by this partnership,” he added.
Clarification on Awari Technologies Collaboration
Addressing speculations, Kashifu clarified that the partnership with Awari Technologies is separate from the collaboration with Google. He explained that the initiative with Awari is under a “Special Purpose Vehicle” focused on developing a large language model in Nigeria to promote local languages and cultural heritage.
Strategic Vision for Nigeria’s Digital Economy
The partnership with Google is part of Nigeria’s broader vision to become a global technology leader. By investing in infrastructure, talent development, and innovation, the country aims to accelerate its digital economy and create a robust tech ecosystem.
This strategic initiative follows President Bola Tinubu’s recent meeting with Google CEO Sundar Pichai in Paris, where they discussed the importance of digital transformation and economic growth.
As Nigeria continues to strengthen its position in the global digital economy, this partnership is expected to create job opportunities, attract tech investments, and foster an environment conducive to technological innovation.
