Apple has launched the iPhone 16e, a more affordable alternative to its flagship iPhone 16, but consumers may find better value elsewhere. Priced at £599, the 16e retains many of the core features of the standard iPhone 16 while cutting costs by using older design elements, including a single rear camera and the return of the dated notch.

While Apple touts the 16e’s improved battery life and Apple Intelligence support, the handset’s budget-friendly compromises are noticeable. Its design resembles the iPhone 14, and the single-lens camera setup is a stark contrast to the multi-camera arrays seen on premium models.

However, for the same price—or even less—consumers can find older flagship devices that outshine the iPhone 16e in several key areas. Here are four alternatives worth considering:

iPhone 15 Pro (2023) – Premium Apple Experience for Less

For a similar price, a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro offers a superior design, featuring titanium edges, a triple-camera setup, and ProMotion technology with a 120Hz refresh rate. Unlike the 16e, it supports faster MagSafe charging and boasts an A17 Pro chip optimized for gaming. While buyers must opt for a second-hand or refurbished unit, the trade-off is access to a high-end iPhone experience at a lower cost.

Samsung Galaxy S24 (2024) – Flagship Android at the Same Price

The Samsung Galaxy S24, available brand new for £599, presents an attractive alternative with its 120Hz AMOLED display, 8K video recording, and triple-camera system. It also benefits from seven years of software updates, ensuring longevity comparable to Apple’s ecosystem. With Galaxy AI built-in, Samsung’s handset competes directly with Apple Intelligence while offering a more versatile camera setup.

Google Pixel 9 (2024) – AI-Powered Photography

Google’s Pixel 9, available for as low as £520 refurbished, stands out for its advanced AI-driven photography. Features such as real-time image editing and a built-in Gemini AI assistant provide a cutting-edge user experience. With a 6.3-inch OLED display, 120Hz refresh rate, and vibrant colour options, the Pixel 9 delivers a stylish and performance-packed alternative.

OnePlus 12 – The Powerhouse with Long Battery Life

For those prioritizing performance and battery life, the OnePlus 12, priced around £509 refurbished, offers a 6.82-inch OLED display, 120Hz refresh rate, and a 5,400mAh battery capable of lasting two days on a single charge. Its 100W fast charging can fully recharge the device in just 26 minutes, making it an excellent choice for heavy users.

Verdict: Is the iPhone 16e Worth It?

While the iPhone 16e is Apple’s most affordable new iPhone, its single-camera setup and older design may not appeal to all buyers. With high-quality refurbished and previous-generation flagship models available for the same price, budget-conscious consumers have compelling alternatives that offer better displays, superior cameras, and longer-lasting performance.

For those set on purchasing a new iPhone, the iPhone 16e remains a viable option. However, for those open to exploring refurbished flagships, better deals can be found elsewhere.
