Tech giant Google has announced plans to discontinue Google Assistant later this year, replacing it with Gemini, an AI-powered assistant designed for more advanced interactions.
The company confirmed the transition in a blog post on Friday, stating that Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices by the end of 2025.
A Shift to Advanced AI
Google Assistant, which was introduced in 2016, relied on natural language processing and voice recognition to facilitate voice commands and smart device controls. However, the company is now shifting focus to Gemini, a more sophisticated generative AI assistant with capabilities that extend beyond traditional voice interactions.
Gemini, launched in 2024, is designed to offer:
- Advanced reasoning abilities
- Multimodal understanding (processing text, images, and audio)
- More interactive and intelligent responses
In its announcement, Google emphasized the need for an AI assistant that aligns with evolving user expectations.
“To continue our work of building the world’s most helpful assistant, we’ve reimagined the experience with AI at its core to make Gemini your personal, AI-powered assistant,” the company stated.
Transition Plans and Feature Integration
Google has already begun transitioning users to Gemini, with millions reportedly making the switch. Over the coming months, the company plans to expand access across more devices, gradually phasing out Google Assistant.
To ease the transition, Google has integrated several popular Google Assistant features into Gemini, including:
- Music playback
- Timers and reminders
- Smart home control
While the company has not provided a specific shutdown date for Google Assistant, it reaffirmed that the transition will be completed by the end of 2025.
Competing in the AI Race
Google’s move comes amid increasing competition in the AI assistant market, with rivals such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Apple’s expected AI enhancements. The company is positioning Gemini as a key player in the future of digital assistance, leveraging generative AI to enhance user interactions.
As the transition unfolds, Google encourages users to explore Gemini’s expanded capabilities, which aim to redefine the role of AI in everyday digital experiences.
