Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, has announced the acquisition of X (formerly Twitter) in an all-stock deal valuing the social media platform at $33 billion. The announcement was made by Musk on Friday, highlighting the integration of xAI’s advanced AI technology with X’s 600 million+ user base.
Key Highlights of the Deal:
- xAI is valued at $80 billion, while X is valued at $33 billion, including $12 billion in debt.
- The merger aims to combine data, models, compute, distribution, and talent to create an AI-driven platform.
- Musk envisions the integration as a way to accelerate human progress, making X a leader in AI-powered digital interaction.
Musk’s AI Ambitions and Competition with OpenAI
Since launching xAI in 2023, Musk has invested billions into AI development, particularly in high-performance Nvidia chips. In February 2025, xAI unveiled Grok 3, an upgraded chatbot that Musk describes as “scary smart” with 10 times the computational power of its predecessor.
With Grok 3, Musk aims to compete directly with ChatGPT (OpenAI) and China’s DeepSeek, intensifying his rivalry with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The two were co-founders of OpenAI in 2015, but their relationship has since turned increasingly hostile and litigious.
The Future of X: AI-Driven Social Networking?
By integrating xAI’s machine learning and natural language models into X, Musk is likely aiming to transform the platform into an AI-powered “everything app”, capable of advanced chat interactions, personalized content, and autonomous decision-making.
While X has struggled with advertiser trust and declining revenues since Musk’s takeover in 2022, analysts predict that ad revenue will grow this year as brands navigate Musk’s political influence.
This move further cements Musk’s long-term AI ambitions, positioning X as a direct challenger to Google, OpenAI, and Meta in the race for AI dominance.
