The dynamics of digital media influence in Africa are being driven more by strategic execution than by population figures, according to SquirrelPR’s newly released RANKED2025 report, which provides a comprehensive look at the continent’s leading digital news platforms.
In a statement announcing the report on Monday, the digital PR firm noted that content relevance, cross-border appeal, and social media strength are now the key determinants of reach and impact across Africa’s digital landscape.
The report analysed five major African media markets—Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, and Ghana—and found that Egypt’s Youm7, an Arabic-language news outlet, led the continent with over 450 million visits in 2024, despite the country’s relatively moderate digital penetration compared to markets like Nigeria.
“The outsized influence of Youm7 shows that media impact is no longer a simple function of country size,” the company said. “Platforms that invest in distribution strategy, content quality, and cross-border accessibility are outperforming—even in smaller or less connected markets.”
Strategic, Not Statistical
Released at an official launch event in Lagos, the RANKED2025 report categorises digital platforms into four verticals—News & Public Affairs, Business & Financial News, Technology News, and Entertainment & Lifestyle—and ranks them across three tiers of influence based on annual visit volume.
Tier 1 platforms, with over 100 million annual visits, include:
- Youm7 (Egypt)
- News24 (South Africa)
- Daily Nation (Kenya)
- GhanaWeb (Ghana)
- Vanguard Online (Nigeria)
“This report is not just about rankings—it’s about reshaping how we understand influence and how we communicate across borders,” said James Ezechukwu, co-founder of SquirrelPR. “RANKED2025 equips media professionals with the clarity and context they need to thrive in a fast-evolving digital environment.”
The Social Media Amplifier
The report also emphasised the pivotal role of social media in amplifying digital news platforms’ visibility and engagement. Platforms with strong social followings consistently ranked higher, regardless of country.
“Social media is emerging as the silent amplifier of digital news platforms,” SquirrelPR stated. “Strong audience engagement directly translates to higher visibility and influence.”
Content Strengths and Weaknesses
While Egypt’s Youm7 led in general readership, the report noted that Egypt lags behind in niche content like business and technology reporting. In contrast:
- Nigeria was strong in entertainment journalism but showed potential for growth in tech and finance content.
- South Africa stood out in business and technology.
- Kenya and Ghana were praised for their balanced performance across content categories.
A Toolkit for Media Strategy
Beyond the rankings, RANKED2025 is positioned as a tool for media strategists, public relations professionals, and advertisers, offering data-driven insights for audience targeting, campaign planning, and content positioning across the continent.
As Africa’s digital ecosystem matures, SquirrelPR’s report reinforces that influence is no longer about who has the biggest audience—it’s about who knows how to reach them.
