Google’s NotebookLM is fast emerging as a transformative AI-powered tool designed to supercharge productivity by helping users organise, summarise, and interact with their information more intelligently.
Described as a “super-smart notebook,” NotebookLM reads and understands documents, notes, and web content, allowing users to extract key insights, generate summaries, and even ask context-specific questions—all within a streamlined workspace.
One of the key figures behind the development of NotebookLM is Steven Johnson, a renowned author and innovation expert, who has worked closely with Google’s team on the project over the past two years.
In a blog post, Johnson described the platform as “a tool for understanding things,” noting that its core mission is to help users explore topics more deeply and efficiently. He referred to it as a “virtual research assistant” capable of delivering personalised insights across a wide range of subjects.
Getting Started: Explore with Random Documents
Johnson advised new users to begin by uploading their 10 most recent documents, even if they seem unrelated. This, he explained, allows users to get a hands-on feel for the tool’s capabilities.
“Whether or not you’re familiar with the content, NotebookLM can highlight new connections or fresh insights,” he said.
He also suggested creating a central “everything notebook”—a comprehensive repository containing frequently used materials such as inspirational quotes, company policies, brainstorming notes, and more. This kind of notebook can serve as a space for open-ended thinking and creative exploration.
For more focused work, Johnson recommended building project-specific notebooks, such as one he personally maintains for the development of NotebookLM, which includes press releases, feature notes, and internal documents.
Connecting the Dots
One of NotebookLM’s strongest features, according to Johnson, is its ability to synthesise scattered information—from browser tabs to saved files and design references.
He illustrated this with the example of creating a slide presentation: users can brainstorm with Google’s Gemini, gather sources, jot notes, and then upload all the materials into NotebookLM. The AI can then generate organised summaries or outlines, streamlining the presentation-building process.
“It’s like having a teammate who understands the full context of your work,” he explained.
Let the Tool Ask the Right Questions
NotebookLM’s suggested questions feature is especially helpful for users unsure of where to begin. Once content is uploaded, the system automatically proposes questions to guide exploration and spark deeper thinking.
A feature called the “Notebook Guide” kicks in after a few sources are added, offering intuitive starter questions tailored to the topic at hand.
Versatile Output Formats
Recognising that users absorb information in different ways, Johnson highlighted the tool’s format flexibility. NotebookLM can transform content into:
- FAQs
- Briefing documents
- Timelines
- Tables of contents
- Study guides
- Audio Overviews
This versatility supports both comprehension and presentation, making it easier for users to adapt insights for different audiences or learning styles.
Creativity Unleashed
NotebookLM’s usefulness extends beyond the workplace and academia. Johnson noted that creatives—especially writers and game designers—are increasingly turning to the platform to manage fictional worlds, character arcs, and narrative development.
Writers can upload notes, sketches, and reference documents, then query the system with prompts like “What’s the backstory of this character?” or “Which characters live in this region?” The AI can even provide feedback on storylines or characters, acting as a creative partner.
Johnson called it “a search function for interestingness,” helping creators view their work from unexpected angles.
A Favourite: Audio Overviews
Among the tool’s most innovative features is the Audio Overview, which Johnson described as “mind-blowing.” After uploading a document, users receive a dynamic conversation between two AI hosts discussing its content.
This feature can be customised—users can adjust tone, focus, and complexity to match their preferences.
Johnson has uploaded his own writing into the system to receive constructive feedback via audio, calling the experience both “insightful and entertaining.”
Built on Privacy
Google has emphasised that user privacy is a cornerstone of NotebookLM’s design. All uploaded data remains private and is never used to train AI models.
“We built NotebookLM with privacy by design,” Johnson reaffirmed, assuring users that the platform is safe for sensitive or proprietary content.
Whether you’re a student, a professional, or a creative thinker, Google’s NotebookLM offers a powerful toolkit for anyone looking to tame information overload, boost productivity, and explore ideas in deeper, smarter ways.
