LAGOS — Google has announced the global beta rollout of AI Max, an advanced upgrade to its Search Ads platform, designed to help businesses — including those across Africa — reach more customers with smarter, AI-powered advertising tools.
The new feature, powered by Google’s Gemini AI technology, marks a significant shift from traditional keyword-based ads, enabling businesses to appear in a broader range of search queries, including ones they might not have anticipated.
“Consumers are asking more specific questions and expect more relevant answers,” said Brian Burdick, Senior Director of Search at Google. “With AI Max, we use advanced AI to better understand these queries and connect businesses with potential customers at the right moment.”
The rollout comes at a time when Africa’s digital economy is rapidly expanding, with more consumers relying on online searches to make purchasing decisions — from comparing prices to finding nearby services. For small businesses navigating tight budgets and competitive markets, AI Max could be a game-changer.
Smarter, More Relevant Ads
AI Max introduces search term matching, dynamic text customization, and final URL expansion — all designed to optimize how ads appear and where users land. For example, a small boutique in Kumasi selling handmade bags could now appear in searches like “durable carryall for weekend travel” even without using those exact keywords.
The platform also provides greater control for advertisers, including location targeting and brand filters, helping businesses refine their reach without sacrificing relevance.
According to Google, early adopters of AI Max saw an average 14% increase in conversions with no significant rise in costs — a promising signal for entrepreneurs in resource-constrained settings.
A Lift for African SMEs
With its low-friction integration into existing campaigns, AI Max doesn’t require businesses to start from scratch. That’s a key advantage for African entrepreneurs who, as Burdick noted, often juggle multiple responsibilities.
“AI Max makes advertising work harder for them without adding to their workload,” he said.
The launch aligns with Google’s ongoing commitment to support African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including initiatives like the Hustle Academy, which offers digital skills training and business mentorship.
As Africa’s online economy matures, tools like AI Max could play a vital role in leveling the digital playing field, empowering local businesses to grow faster, smarter, and more efficiently.
The open beta begins later this month, with full global access, including across African markets.
