Just days after Apple unveiled iOS 26 at its WWDC event, Google has officially launched Android 16, and it’s already rolling out to select Pixel devices.
The update is available immediately for users with Pixel 6 and newer models, and unlike in previous years, there’s no need to sign up for the Android Beta for Pixel programme to access the new software. For those yet to see a notification, an over-the-air update should arrive soon.
Subtle Now, Bold Later
While Android 16 brings meaningful upgrades, users hoping for a major visual overhaul will need to wait a little longer. The much-anticipated Material 3 Expressive design language isn’t set to debut until September 3, according to Android Authority. When it does, it’s expected to introduce more customizable and expressive themes across Android devices.
Smart Notification Tweaks
One of the more immediately noticeable changes is the reimagined notification system, particularly useful for food delivery services like Uber Eats and Deliveroo. Users will now be able to track their orders directly from the status bar at the top of the home screen, eliminating the need to dive into apps for real-time updates.
Tighter Security with “Advanced Protection”
Android 16 also strengthens device security through a new feature called Advanced Protection. While it may not come with flashy interfaces, this “set it and forget it” tool is designed to quietly bolster phone security in the background.
A standout element is Inactivity Reboot — a safeguard that automatically restarts the device after 72 hours of inactivity, locking it and rendering user data unreadable until the next successful unlock.
Desktop-Style Experience on Tablets
Another significant enhancement, coming later this year, is a desktop-style user interface for tablets and phones connected to larger displays. Developed in partnership with Samsung — whose DeX platform already offers a similar experience — this feature will support resizable app windows, offering a productivity experience similar to what users enjoy on macOS or Windows.
When Will Other Devices Get It?
While Android 16 is now live for supported Pixel phones, Google says the update will roll out to other manufacturers’ devices “later this year.” However, as is often the case with Android rollouts, the timeline may vary by brand and region.
