Lagos, Nigeria – In a major boost for Nigeria’s cybersecurity and compliance sector, Smartcomply Academy, the training arm of indigenous cybersecurity firm Smartcomply, has received international accreditation from the American Accreditation Association (AAA). The recognition enables the Lagos-based institution to issue globally accepted certifications in information security and data privacy, including ISO 27001.
The milestone positions Smartcomply Academy among a select group of African institutions certified to deliver high-quality, internationally benchmarked training, addressing a critical skills gap as businesses face increasing pressure to comply with global data standards.
“This is about reshaping Nigeria’s narrative in the global compliance space,” said Gbemisola Osunrinde, CEO of Smartcomply. “We are stating, unequivocally, that the skills and certifications earned here in Africa are not just equivalent but benchmarked against the highest international standards.”
Filling a Market Gap Amid the “Japa” Exodus
With mounting regulatory scrutiny in sectors such as finance, tech, energy, and healthcare, Nigerian firms have traditionally relied on costly foreign consultants or overseas training programs to meet international compliance requirements. This model, however, has grown unsustainable amid the country’s ongoing talent drain—popularly dubbed the “Japa” wave.
Smartcomply’s new accreditation provides a cost-effective and locally relevant alternative by allowing Nigerian professionals to obtain globally recognised certifications without leaving the country.
“For years, the default choice for many Nigerian companies has been foreign bodies like PECB,” Osunrinde noted. “We’re now offering a compelling, world-class local alternative that understands the nuances of our market.”
Empowering Local Compliance Capabilities
The AAA endorsement is expected to bolster Nigeria’s internal capacity for data protection and cybersecurity auditing. Smartcomply’s programmes will allow organisations to build in-house teams of certified compliance professionals, reducing dependence on foreign expertise and lowering training costs.
The development is especially timely, coming in the wake of Nigeria’s Data Protection Act, which mandates stricter controls and accountability around personal data handling. By aligning with international standards, Smartcomply Academy aims to give Nigerian firms a competitive edge in global markets and cross-border regulatory environments.
A Strategic Vision for African-Led Compliance
The accreditation is part of a broader expansion strategy for Smartcomply, which earlier this year launched a partner programme to merge tech solutions with capacity-building services. Industry experts say the firm’s trajectory could transform compliance from a “box-ticking exercise” into a strategic enabler of business resilience.
“This is about more than just accreditation,” Osunrinde added. “It’s a signal to the world that African institutions can lead not follow when it comes to global compliance and cybersecurity standards.”
With the AAA accreditation, Smartcomply Academy now joins a select group of institutions across Africa capable of certifying personnel to internationally recognised standards ushering in a new era of local training with global impact.
