The Federal Government has endorsed the rebranding of 9mobile to T2, describing it as a major step forward for Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.
The transformation, unveiled in Lagos last week, is part of T2’s strategy to reposition itself in the highly competitive market. It is anchored by a three-year national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria, which will significantly expand network coverage and improve service quality for T2 customers.
Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the move reflects the sector’s growth and readiness for further innovation.
“With the sustainability of Nigeria’s telecom sector now firmly on track, yesterday we celebrated another milestone the unveiling of the new T2 brand, formerly 9mobile,” Tijani said.
He credited President Bola Tinubu’s administration for laying a stronger foundation through investor-friendly policies, reforms, and infrastructure initiatives such as Project Bridge a 90,000km fibre rollout and the deployment of 7,000 rural telecom sites to connect over 20 million underserved Nigerians.
Tijani noted that the synergy between private sector investment and government projects would boost broadband penetration, improve service quality, and increase the digital economy’s contribution to Nigeria’s GDP to over 20% within the next five years.
“Nigeria’s best digital years are still ahead, and together, we are building them,” the minister said, congratulating T2’s leadership on the rebrand.
The telecom industry currently serves over 220 million mobile lines and has attracted more than $75bn in investment in the past two decades.
