Twins Eddie and Paul Ndichu have spent over five years building WapiPay, a fintech platform that simplifies cross-border payments between Africa and the rest of the world. Meeting them at their Nairobi headquarters in Westlands, one senses the same drive that propelled them from hardship to entrepreneurship.
The brothers’ journey began in Australia, where they arrived for university only to lose their father and the financial support that came with him. Forced to work odd jobs to pay tuition, they learned resilience, the value of money, and self-reliance. Eddie and Paul later pursued postgraduate studies at MIT and Harvard, shaping their expertise in technology, blockchain, AI, innovation, and business strategy.
Their professional paths through top African banks revealed a glaring gap in cross-border remittances. Traditional channels were slow, costly, and inefficient—moving money between Africa and Asia could take 2–3 days with 10–15% losses. WapiPay’s mission became clear: digitise and simplify international money transfers while maintaining affordability.
The “aha” moment came when they successfully connected M-PESA and WeChat Pay, proving the technical concept. Early customer validation forced a pivot from B2C to B2B, and they built a company culture rooted in operational excellence, responsiveness, and high standards.
For the brothers, WapiPay is personal. They navigated regulatory hurdles across Kenya, Singapore, Uganda, and Nigeria, learned from mistakes, and fostered a team culture reflecting discipline, persistence, and faith. They view fintech as a space where strategic decisiveness and collaboration are essential, coining the principle: “Where there’s mystery, there’s margin.”
Today, WapiPay focuses on financial inclusion, creating tools like RemitScore to allow lenders to assess creditworthiness based on remittance patterns. The company is profitable and aims for global scale, leveraging blockchain and AI to reshape digital payments worldwide.
When asked about their North Star, they agree: God guides the business, and the goal is incremental improvement every day. Their vision is ambitious—to create a global technology company built out of Africa and redefine the flow of money internationally, staying committed to operational excellence, creativity, and fearless innovation.
Even in downtime, the brothers remain driven: Paul finds solace in reflection, music, and family, while Eddie balances chess, marathons, and adventure with leadership duties. Their story is a testament to resilience, ingenuity, and the power of partnership in transforming the fintech landscape.
