Google announced on Tuesday that it will acquire cloud security platform Wiz for $32 billion in an all-cash deal, marking the largest acquisition in Google’s history. The move aims to bolster cybersecurity capabilities as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in technology infrastructure.
The acquisition will integrate Wiz into Google Cloud, enhancing multi-cloud security solutions and offering an end-to-end security platform for businesses of all sizes in the AI era, the companies said in a joint statement.
Why Google is Betting Big on Wiz
With AI reshaping cybersecurity risks, Google emphasized the need for stronger defenses against emerging threats and national security vulnerabilities. Wiz specializes in:
- Continuous scanning of an organization’s cloud environments and code
- Real-time monitoring to detect and block cyber threats
- Prioritization of critical risks based on real impact
Started in 2020 by Israeli-born CEO Assaf Rappaport, Wiz quickly became a major player in cloud security, with offices in New York, three other US cities, and Tel Aviv.
How Wiz Fits Into Google Cloud’s Strategy
- Wiz will continue serving Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure customers, similar to Google’s Mandiant acquisition in 2022.
- Google Cloud’s revenue hit $43 billion in 2024, growing 31% year-over-year, and this acquisition is expected to accelerate growth.
- The deal aligns with Google’s push to dominate cybersecurity in the multi-cloud landscape.
“With Wiz, we believe we will vastly improve how security is designed, operated, and automated across all major clouds,” said Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian.
Impact on Tech and Cybersecurity Mergers
This $32 billion acquisition signals a potential wave of tech mergers after the departure of Lina Khan, the Biden-era head of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), who was hostile to large tech deals.
Wedbush analyst Dan Ives noted:
“We believe this acquisition will open the door to a massive wave of M&A across the tech landscape.”
Market Reaction
Despite the strategic importance of the deal, Alphabet’s shares dropped 3.8% in morning trading, reflecting investor caution over the high price tag. However, analysts expect long-term benefits as Google strengthens its cybersecurity dominance in the AI age.
