The Dorcas Cancer Foundation (TDCF) has successfully raised funds for the treatment of eight-year-old Matthew Omotosho, who was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer, through a digital campaign on the fundraising platform Giv.ng.
In a statement released to The PUNCH on Tuesday, the Foundation described the effort as a breakthrough in its approach to mobilizing urgent support for children battling cancer. The organization credited technology for enabling quick, transparent, and far-reaching assistance in Matthew’s case.
Dr. Adedayo Joseph, an oncologist and Lead Advocate at TDCF, described the experience as transformative. “Working with Giv.ng was a game changer. As a doctor and advocate, it’s not just about raising funds; it’s about telling stories with dignity and impact. The Giv.ng team understood that from day one. Their support gave us more than visibility; it gave our patient hope,” she said.
Prior to the partnership with Giv.ng, the Foundation often faced delays due to conventional donation channels. With Giv.ng’s digital tools, however, TDCF was able to quickly rally support from Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.
“Partnering with Giv.ng has allowed us to reach wider audiences, raise critical funds, and share stories that move people to action,” said Korede Akindele, a cancer advocate and Foundation member.
Matthew has since undergone a successful surgery and is now on the path to recovery. His story, according to the Foundation, underscores the power of digital platforms to deliver life-saving interventions swiftly, especially when accompanied by transparency and compelling storytelling.
The success of this campaign highlights a growing shift in healthcare advocacy, where technology is increasingly being leveraged to bridge funding gaps and galvanize public support for urgent medical needs.
