LG has officially discontinued its entire lineup of Blu-ray players, including the popular UBK80 and UBK90 UHD Blu-ray players, introduced in 2018. According to a report by FlatpanelsHD, while remaining stock will still be available for purchase, LG has no immediate plans to produce more units.
This decision aligns with a broader trend in the industry, as UHD Blu-ray players have struggled to compete with the growing popularity of streaming services.
Market Trends and Decline in Blu-ray Player Manufacturing
LG isn’t the first major company to exit the UHD Blu-ray market.
- Oppo ceased production in 2018, the same year LG introduced its UBK80 and UBK90 models.
- Samsung followed suit in 2019, leaving consumers with fewer choices.
Despite LG Korea stating that the company remains open to resuming production if demand grows, the overall decline in physical media has been hard to ignore.
Understanding UHD Blu-ray vs. Blu-ray
UHD Blu-ray, an upgrade to standard Blu-ray, offers:
- 4K resolution (3840×2160 pixels), compared to Blu-ray’s FHD resolution (1920×1080 pixels).
- Support for HDR formats like Dolby Vision and HDR10, delivering better color accuracy and contrast.
However, its appeal has waned as streaming services increasingly offer 4K HDR content on-demand, eliminating the need for physical media.
Silver Linings in the UHD Blu-ray Market
While major brands like LG, Oppo, and Samsung have exited the market, some alternatives still exist:
- Magnetar UDP800: A high-end player supporting UHD Blu-ray and hi-fi audio playback.
- PS5 and Xbox Series X: Both consoles can play UHD Blu-ray discs, although with limitations (e.g., lack of Dolby Vision playback for discs on both platforms).
The Role of Streaming
Streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video now dominate the entertainment landscape, offering extensive libraries of 4K content. This trend has rendered physical media less relevant for many consumers, contributing to the steep decline in Blu-ray player sales.
Looking Ahead
As demand for physical media dwindles, LG’s decision underscores the shift in consumer habits toward streaming. While UHD Blu-ray retains niche appeal among high-end video enthusiasts, its future as a mainstream format remains uncertain.
