Apple is reportedly developing a new in-house Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip, codenamed Proxima, that could debut in 2025 alongside updated versions of the HomePod Mini and Apple TV, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. This innovation is part of Apple’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on Broadcom, the supplier of connectivity components for its devices.
Key Features of the “Proxima” Chip
The Proxima chip has been in development for several years and will be manufactured by TSMC, the same company responsible for Apple’s Silicon chips. By using in-house technology, Apple aims to enhance device integration while gaining greater control over component costs and performance.
Product Rollout Timeline
- 2025: The chip is expected to debut with updated HomePod Mini and Apple TV models.
- Late 2025: Possible inclusion in future iPhone models.
- 2026: Expansion to iPad and Mac devices.
Expansion in Smart Home Devices
Apple is reportedly working on a suite of smart home products as part of its long-term strategy:
- A standalone security camera for enhanced home surveillance.
- A wall-mounted smart display set to launch next year, aimed at providing centralized smart home control.
This push into the smart home market reflects Apple’s increasing focus on creating a cohesive ecosystem of devices that integrate seamlessly with its software and services.
Broader Implications
By transitioning to in-house chip production, Apple could:
- Improve Supply Chain Independence: Minimize dependency on external suppliers like Broadcom.
- Enhance Performance: Tailor chips to better integrate with Apple’s proprietary hardware and software.
- Expand Ecosystem: Strengthen its smart home and consumer electronics lineup.
If successful, the Proxima chip and accompanying devices could solidify Apple’s position in the growing smart home market while setting a foundation for even more innovative applications in the future.
