OpenAI has introduced its autonomous AI agent, Operator, to the UK market, marking its first expansion beyond the United States.
Operator, first announced last month, is designed to complete online tasks autonomously, such as shopping based on a photo of a list provided by the user. The AI agent can navigate webpages, interact with menus and buttons, and use a keyboard and mouse to complete tasks independently. However, users can intervene at any time or be prompted to take control for actions requiring logins or payment details.
According to OpenAI, Operator has been trained to handle real-world needs and has collaborated with platforms like OpenTable and Uber to facilitate restaurant bookings and transportation arrangements.
Despite its capabilities, OpenAI has categorized Operator as a “research preview” rather than a finished product. In the UK, as in the US, access is currently limited to ChatGPT Pro subscribers, who pay $200 (£159) per month.
AI agents like Operator are considered a significant step in the AI revolution, streamlining administrative and personal tasks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously predicted that AI agents will begin integrating into the workforce in 2025, significantly enhancing productivity.
“We think this is going to be a big trend in AI and really impact the work people can do, how productive they can be, what they can accomplish,” Altman said during a January live stream unveiling the tool.
With its UK launch, Operator brings OpenAI closer to realizing the potential of AI-driven automation in everyday life.
