Google’s latest Android 16 beta has introduced a subtle but practical feature that could become a fan-favorite: a dedicated “Close App” button in the recent apps menu.
According to 9to5Google, the new option appears when users tap on an app icon in the recent apps view. Previously, closing apps required a swipe gesture, but now users can simply select “Close” from the menu alongside existing options like Pause App, Split Screen, and App Info.
While a minor tweak, the Close App button is a useful addition for those who prefer tapping over swiping—especially in situations where gestures may be inconvenient, such as when using a stylus or accessibility tools.
More Features in Android 16 Beta
The Android 16 beta cycle has so far introduced a handful of quality-of-life improvements, including:
- Lock screen widgets, expanding a feature previously limited to tablets.
- Live Updates for Google Maps, allowing real-time information from apps without opening them.
- New camera controls, including enhanced exposure settings and more precise adjustments for color temperature and tint.
While Android 16 isn’t shaping up to be a groundbreaking update, these refinements could make everyday interactions smoother.
What’s Next for Android 16?
More details about Android 16’s features are expected at Google I/O in May, where Google is likely to focus on AI-driven enhancements, particularly around its Gemini AI platform.
For now, Android users can explore the latest beta and look forward to a more polished experience when the final version arrives later this year.
