Samsung is reportedly preparing to enter the bone conduction headphone market, a space currently dominated by brands like Shokz and Suunto. According to reliable Samsung leaker Ice Universe, the tech giant will unveil its first bone conduction headset, codenamed “Able”, at the launch event for the next-generation Galaxy Z Fold 7 in July.
Bone conduction technology, which transmits sound vibrations through the skull rather than the ear canal, has gained popularity among athletes and those who prefer open-ear listening. Unlike traditional in-ear earbuds, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Buds series, these devices allow users to hear ambient sounds while listening to music or taking calls.
The Weibo leak, as reported by 9to5Google, suggests that Samsung’s upcoming device will be an open wireless stereo (OWS) headset, meaning it will deliver sound around the ear rather than inside it. While details on the product remain scarce, Samsung’s entry into the bone conduction market signals the company’s intent to compete with established players.
A Growing Market for Open-Ear Audio
Bone conduction headphones have become a preferred option for runners, cyclists, and swimmers, offering a safer alternative to traditional earbuds by allowing users to remain aware of their surroundings. However, some users have reported discomfort due to the pressure of these devices on the skull.
In response, other brands are exploring alternative technologies. Audio-Technica recently launched its second-generation cartilage conduction headphones, which transmit sound through the cartilage rather than the bone, potentially reducing discomfort.
With AirPods and true wireless earbuds normalizing 24/7 earphone use, the demand for alternative audio solutions is growing. Open-ear designs are especially beneficial for those with hearing impairments and those prioritizing situational awareness.
While the details surrounding Samsung’s “Able” headset remain speculative, the company’s proven track record in audio innovation suggests it could make a significant impact in the category. If the rumors hold true, we may see a new contender in the bone conduction market as early as this summer.
