London, March 27, 2024 – Sky UK has announced plans to cut 2,000 jobs—approximately 7% of its total workforce—as part of a major restructuring to prioritize digital customer service. The move will result in the closure of three of the company’s ten UK customer service centres located in Stockport, Sheffield, and Leeds Central.
The decision comes as consumer preferences shift towards online messaging and email communication, leading to a projected one-third reduction in call volumes over the next few years. Sky’s Dunfermline and Newcastle operations will also be affected, though the extent of these changes remains under consultation.
Investing in Digital Transformation
In a bid to modernize its customer service, Sky plans to make a multi-million-pound investment in its Livingston site, transforming it into a “centre of excellence” aimed at delivering faster, simpler, and more digital customer service.
A Sky UK spokesperson explained:
“We’re transforming our business to deliver quicker, simpler, and more digital customer service. Our customers increasingly want choice—to speak to us on the phone when they need us most and the ease of managing everyday tasks digitally.”
“We’re investing in a new centre of excellence for customer service, alongside cutting-edge digital technology to make our service seamless, reliable, and available 24/7. This is about building a future-ready Sky that continues to put our customers and their needs first.”
What This Means for Customers
The focus on digital-first services suggests a greater reliance on self-service platforms and AI-powered chatbots, a trend already adopted by other major broadband and mobile operators.
Despite these changes, Ofcom data consistently shows Sky as having some of the lowest consumer complaint levels across broadband, phone, TV, and mobile services. However, any decline in customer service quality following these closures may not be reflected in Ofcom’s reports until late 2025 or early 2026 due to reporting delays.
Industry-Wide Trend
Sky’s move mirrors a broader industry shift where telecom companies are streamlining operations through automation and digital platforms to improve efficiency while reducing operational costs.
As Sky undergoes this transformation, the industry will be watching closely to see if the company can maintain its customer satisfaction levels while adapting to changing consumer expectations.
