Meta has officially launched a dedicated iPad app for WhatsApp, ending years of anticipation from Apple tablet users. Available now via the App Store, the app delivers a native WhatsApp experience tailored to iPadOS, more than 15 years after the messaging service and iPad debuted.
The new iPad app offers full functionality found on the iPhone version, including audio and video calls with up to 32 participants, support for front and rear cameras, and screen sharing. It also introduces a two-column layout, similar to Apple’s Messages app, with contacts and chats on one side and the active conversation on the other.
Optimised for iPadOS, the app supports Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over, making multitasking easier. Users can now run WhatsApp alongside browsers or streaming apps without losing access to their chats.
Previously, iPad users had to rely on WhatsApp Web or desktop versions to use the service on larger screens. Meta acknowledged the demand for a tablet-friendly version back in 2022, and a recent teaser post on X hinted at its arrival.
Though not explicitly highlighted in the release notes for version 25.16.81, the update brings full-screen functionality across the iPad lineup, including the iPad, iPad mini, iPad Pro, and iPad Air. Meta also published a blog post marking the rollout.
The release is a welcome milestone for users, and attention now turns to the long-requested Instagram iPad app, which remains missing from Meta’s tablet offerings.
