Microsoft has introduced a new unified update orchestration platform for Windows 11, aimed at centralizing how updates are scheduled and managed across devices. The platform is currently in private preview for select developers and vendors and is designed to bring more consistency to update experiences for apps, drivers, and other system components.
“Updates across the Windows ecosystem can feel like a fragmented experience,” said Angie Chen, a Microsoft product manager. “We’re building a unified, intelligent update orchestration platform capable of supporting any update alongside Windows updates.”
While the new platform does not push updates itself, it allows developers to integrate their update processes via Windows Runtime (WinRT) APIs and PowerShell. This gives developers the ability to register and control how and when their apps update, while users benefit from intelligent scheduling based on system status, user activity, and power conditions.
The system will support MSIX/APPX apps and Win32 applications with custom logic, provided they hook into Microsoft’s new APIs. Update activities will be logged and presented through a unified diagnostic interface, easing troubleshooting for IT admins and support teams.
To join the private preview, developers must email Microsoft at unifiedorchestrator@service.microsoft.com.
Windows Backup for Organizations Enters Public Preview
Microsoft also announced the limited public preview of Windows Backup for Organizations, a tool first unveiled at Microsoft Ignite 2024. It enables IT admins to back up Windows 10 and 11 devices, allowing users to restore their settings during device reimages, resets, or migrations.
The tool is expected to play a key role in post-Windows 10 migrations, ahead of its October end-of-life. It may also provide an efficient fallback in the event of malware or ransomware infections, allowing organizations to wipe and restore devices rather than pay ransom demands.
Minimum requirements include:
- Windows 10/11 on Microsoft Entra joined or hybrid joined devices
- Windows 11 22H2 or newer for restoration
- Active Microsoft Intune test tenant with admin access
- Enrollment in the Microsoft Management Customer Connection Program
Microsoft has yet to release full technical documentation, and organizations must sign up for the trial to gain early access and provide feedback.
