Private aerospace company Blue Origin has announced significant progress in its mission to make space accessible to a wider range of people through its New Shepard programme, which has now flown 46 humans and over 175 scientific payloads beyond the Kármán line — the internationally recognised boundary of space.
In a statement sent to The PUNCH, Blue Origin — founded by billionaire entrepreneur Jeff Bezos — disclosed that its suborbital flights have opened up space travel to participants from around the world and from all walks of life, including educators, scientists, conservationists, artists, and social impact leaders.
“These flights are enabling people from across the globe and from different walks of life to experience space and bring that inspiration back to their communities,” said Audrey Powers, Vice President of Flight & Mission Operations.
Among the prominent individuals who have journeyed aboard the New Shepard rocket are Laura Shepard Churchley, daughter of Alan Shepard — the first American in space, and television personality Michael Strahan. Others include Cameron Bess, a content creator and space industry executive, and Carl Kuehne, environmental advocate and Chairman of Land and Building Technology.
Notably, the programme has also hosted Jim Kitchen, an adventurer who has travelled to every continent and engaged with remote communities, including monks in the mountains of Tibet.
The company highlighted that these flights are not just a technological feat but also a cultural milestone, carrying representatives from all seven continents and inspiring global interest in space exploration.
“Our vision is a future where millions of people can live and work in space for the benefit of Earth,” said Sara Blask, Vice President of Communications at Blue Origin. “We are committed to democratising space and opening it to more voices.”
Launched from West Texas, New Shepard missions are designed to take passengers on brief suborbital journeys exceeding 100 kilometres above sea level. These flights offer a few minutes of weightlessness and stunning views of Earth’s curvature before returning safely.
The company said the programme continues to expand with every mission, reinforcing its commitment to commercial space travel and advancing the broader goal of sustainable space exploration.
Blue Origin encouraged the public to stay connected via platforms like YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Threads, and to subscribe for mission updates through its official website.
