The White House has officially joined TikTok, the same platform former President Donald Trump once vowed to ban during his first term.
Its debut post featured clips of Trump at various events set to Kendrick Lamar’s track, referencing a popular TikTok edit of the film Creed, starring Michael B. Jordan. The video includes Trump declaring, “I am your voice,” alongside the caption: “America we are BACK! What’s up TikTok?”
The move underscores the administration’s strategy to connect with younger audiences. Trump’s 2024 campaign account amassed more than 15 million followers, a figure many aides credit with helping him win over Gen Z and millennial voters.
“President Trump’s message dominated TikTok during his presidential campaign, and we’re excited to build upon those successes and communicate in a way no other administration has before,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
Trump’s embrace of TikTok marks a sharp contrast with his previous stance. In 2020, he signed an executive order seeking to block transactions with the app’s parent company, ByteDance, citing national security concerns over potential Chinese access to U.S. user data.
However, after returning to office this year, Trump paused the planned ban and extended deadlines for ByteDance to sell its U.S. operations. While he previously suggested that a “very wealthy group” was ready to buy the platform, no details have been disclosed.
With the new White House account, Trump appears set to use TikTok not only as a messaging tool but also as a symbol of his administration’s changing approach to digital platforms.
