Samsung’s 9100 Pro SSD has dominated the high-speed storage market in recent weeks, but it appears Kingston is ready to challenge its reign. According to leaked press materials obtained by VideoCardz, Kingston is set to unveil the Fury Renegade G5 SSD, which boasts PCIe Gen5 technology and write speeds that edge out Samsung’s flagship drive.
Kingston vs. Samsung: A Speed Showdown
Kingston’s Fury Renegade G5 SSD promises read speeds of up to 14,800MBps and write speeds of 14,000MBps, slightly surpassing the Samsung 9100 Pro, which offers a 13,400MBps max write speed. While the 600MBps difference in write speed may not be game-changing for all users, enthusiasts and professionals who demand top-tier performance may take notice.
Samsung’s 9100 Pro SSD is already on the market with pricing set at:
- $200 for 1TB,
- $300 for 2TB,
- $550 for 4TB.
Kingston appears to be following suit with identical storage capacities (1TB, 2TB, and 4TB), though there is no confirmation of an 8TB model—something Samsung is also developing for future release.
Tech Behind the Speed
One of the key differences between the two drives lies in their controllers:
- Samsung uses its own proprietary controller for the 9100 Pro.
- Kingston relies on the Silicon Motion SM2508 controller.
Kingston’s 1TB model will deliver 2,200,000 IOPS read and 2,250,000 IOPS write performance, while the 2TB and 4TB models will maintain 2,200,000 IOPS across the board.
Availability and Market Impact
While Samsung already has the 9100 Pro available for purchase, Kingston has yet to announce pricing or a release date for the Fury Renegade G5 SSD. However, the leak of official marketing materials suggests that a launch could be imminent.
The real question now is pricing—if Kingston can undercut Samsung’s prices, the small speed advantage could make it a serious contender in the high-performance SSD market. If not, Samsung’s faster availability and well-established reputation may give it the edge.
For now, PC builders, gamers, and content creators will be watching closely to see whether Kingston can shake up the SSD market—or if Samsung maintains its speed supremacy.
