Gmail users on Android and iPhone are set to experience a major AI upgrade, as Google begins rolling out automatic email summaries powered by its Gemini assistant. The new feature eliminates the need to manually request summaries and signals a more prominent role for generative AI in everyday email use.
Previously, users had to tap a “Summarize this email” button for Gemini to condense a lengthy thread or multi-reply conversation. Now, the Gmail app will automatically display a summary card—crafted by AI—at the top of select emails. These summaries appear as concise bullet points and update dynamically as new replies are added, offering users a snapshot of key information without needing to scroll through the entire thread.
The feature is currently available to Google Workspace customers, Google One AI Premium subscribers, and users with Gemini Education add-ons. At launch, it supports only English-language emails and is exclusive to mobile devices. Google says the rollout will continue over the next two weeks, though there’s no confirmed timeline for expansion to standard Gmail users or desktop platforms.
This shift is part of Google’s broader push to embed generative AI across its services. By making email summaries a default feature, Google is signaling a move from AI as an optional aid to a core component of the user experience.
However, not everyone may welcome the change. Users uncomfortable with AI-generated content or the idea of Google processing their emails through large language models (LLMs) can opt out—but at a cost. Disabling automatic summaries requires turning off Gmail’s “smart features,” which also deactivates tools like Smart Compose, Smart Reply, high-priority notifications, and package tracking.
The new feature reflects a growing trend: using GenAI for practical productivity boosts. For users inundated with long or complex email threads, the summaries could be a time-saving lifeline. Still, the shift raises questions about user control, privacy, and the balance between convenience and oversight.
While some may appreciate the streamlined interface and faster insights, others could view the summaries as intrusive or unnecessary—especially for brief messages. Nevertheless, Google appears confident that most users will embrace the change as it integrates AI more deeply into the Gmail ecosystem.
