Travellers at Nigeria’s major international airports can now enjoy one hour of free high-speed internet, thanks to a new partnership between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest telecom operator.
The service, which quietly began in December, is already live at Terminal 2 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Passengers can connect without entering a password, making the experience seamless.
FAAN confirmed that the service will soon expand to Port Harcourt International Airport, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, and the new temporary terminal at MMIA.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to enhancing passenger experience,” said FAAN Managing Director/CEO Olubunmi Kuku. “Reliable internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity, and we are pleased to offer this value-added service to our passengers.”
Previous attempts to provide Wi-Fi at Nigerian airports, such as the 2015 Globacom partnership across 22 airports, were short-lived due to maintenance and funding issues. The new MTN-backed rollout aims to provide consistent, high-speed connectivity in line with global airport standards.
MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola emphasized the importance of digital connectivity for travellers: “Airports are gateways to nations, and by providing free, high-speed Wi-Fi at our major international airports, we are enhancing convenience and productivity for passengers.”
According to the IATA 2025 Global Passenger Survey, 78% of travellers expect to use their smartphones throughout the airport journey, from bookings and digital identification to baggage tracking, underscoring the growing need for reliable Wi-Fi services.
